The UN Pass and ID office currently prints approximately a quarter of a million badges annually, resulting in substantial paper, metal, and plastic waste. Additionally, this contributes to longer wait times for entry into Palais des Nations. To address these environmental concerns and enhance efficiency, UNDSS Geneva is transitioning to a more eco-friendly and efficient digital badging solution for conference participants at the Palais des Nations.

This shift also aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and No. 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Starting from 1 September 2023, all newly created conference and meeting events on Indico.un.org will default to the new UNOG digital badging system.

Here is how it works: All registered and accredited conference participants will receive a digital badge via email. This digital badge contains their photo, a QR code, and details about the conference. Once downloaded to a mobile device, it functions similarly to an electronic boarding pass, expediting entry to Palais des Nations without the need for a physical badge.

This innovative system offers several benefits:

  • Reduced waste: No more paper, metal, or plastic waste.

  • Faster access: Quick entry to Palais des Nations.

  • Enhanced access control: The digital badge can be coded for specific rooms and buildings as needed.

  • Convenience: Participants can carry their badges on their mobile devices.

For participants without mobile devices, there is an option to print a confirmation and obtain a paper badge at the Pregny Pavilion badging desk.
