Description
For Asia-Pacific, Arab and African countries, despite significant strides in development made in the last two decades, many challenges remain to a successful implementation of the SDGs, including exacerbated inequalities impacting minorities and vulnerable groups, shrinking economies, limited data and monitoring capacities, and lack of capacity in multilevel governance and coherence. The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak further exacerbated these challenges, with direct impacts on local communities and local and national capacities to advance sustainable development and recovery, causing a major setback across multiple SDGs and reversing years of development gains.

The project aims at promoting inclusive post-pandemic recovery and contributing to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs, by focusing on local action. Through a territorial approach to sustainable development anchored on multilevel governance participation and inclusion, the project will strengthen the capacities of local and regional governments and multilevel governance systems in a coherent and mutually reinforcing manner to develop Voluntary Local Reviews and localize the SDGs. The project will also enhance multilevel governance and interlinkages between local and national governments as well as regional and international processes such as the Global Urban Monitoring Framework, SDG Cities Flagship Initiative, and the creation and implementation of Mayors’ Academy. With the involvement of key partners, the projects’ beneficiaries will also be aligned with regional and global processes to discuss their experiences and learn from peers.
