Electoral observation takes on heightened importance in restoring public trust in the integrity of electoral processes and promoting civil and political rights, particularly in nations that have previously grappled with armed conflicts or social unrest. Given the country's history with electoral challenges, reinforcing the effectiveness and execution of electoral observation is integral to maintaining democratic practices and encouraging peace-building within the country.

To address this necessity, the UN Security in Guatemala through a ²Ù±ÆÊÓƵappbuilding Fund (PBF) project, led by UNDP, UNWOMEN and UNFPA, recently organized with UNDSS, two highly informative and engaging workshops centered around "Prevention and Security in the Field" and "Assertive Communication in Stressful Situations¡±. These sessions were designed for electoral inspectors from the Supreme Electoral Court of Guatemala and electoral Observers from the European Union Election Observation Mission in Guatemala 2023 (EUEOM Guatemala 2023), equipping the participants with essential risk management knowledge and skills in the process of carrying out their oversee responsibilities.

The first session, intended for the Supreme Electoral Court of Guatemala, was held on 19 May, followed closely by the second session for the EUEOM Guatemala 2023 on 26 May. Combining theoretical strategies and hands-on training, the workshop provided participants with effective means to identify, prevent, and manage potential risks in the field, as well as the ability to communicate and respond effectively under pressure, contributing to the overall mission's success.

Through its collaborative efforts with the Supreme Electoral Court in Guatemala and EUEOM Guatemala 2023, UNDSS contributes to safer environments for democratic processes in Guatemala by equipping the relevant personnel with essential safety and security knowledge and skills.
