31 December 2022

During the December festive season, UNDSS Kenya donated two vehicles, food and nonfood items to the Kenya Forest Service and Hosanna Children¡¯s Home in separate events. Through such initiatives led by Mr. Peter Marshall, the Principal Security Advisor for Kenya and Eritrea and the Chief, Security and Safety Service, United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), UN security in Kenya continues to demonstrate good corporate citizenship.

Speaking during the vehicle handover ceremony held at UNON, the Director General and the Designated Official, Ms. Zainab Hawa Bangura remarked, ¡°We are happy to donate two used UN vehicles to the Kenya Forest Service. As you all know, deforestation has become a major global challenge. The UN Sustainable Development Goal # 15 aims to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss¡. ¡°The vehicles will also strengthen security within the forest and also ensure the safety of all forest visitors, the neighboring UNON complex and environs.¡±

While receiving the vehicles, the Chief Conservator of Forests appreciated the support of UNDSS noting the challenges of protecting forest resources in the country with constantly evolving threats and limited resources including mobility challenges. He added that the donation would enhance mobility and security response.

Elsewhere at the Hosanna Children¡¯s Home, Kiambu County, UNDSS extended the joys of Christmas by donating food and non-food items bought through generous contributions by UNDSS staff.

The Home established in 1998 takes care of orphans and vulnerable children in need of protection and UNDSS Kenya has been supporting the Home for the last three years.
