In Mid-August, Gilles Michaud, Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security, visited Ukraine with Secretary General, Ant¨®nio Guterres.  The visit included an assessment of progress of the Black Sea Grain Initiative which was signed in July between Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, and the UN. As part of the initiative, a maritime corridor allows foodstuffs and fertilizers to be exported from Ukraine to support global food security. ¡°There is no solution to the global food crisis without ensuring full global access to Ukraine¡¯s food products and Russian food and fertilizers,¡± mentioned Mr.  Guterres during his visit.

Since the agreement came into force, 21 ships have left Ukrainian ports carrying foodstuff to different parts of the world including a UN-chartered vessel to the drought-stricken Horn of Africa.

UN Security continues to enable the UN¡¯s presence and delivery of lifesaving programmes throughout Ukraine. In addition, the department supports visits by senior UN officials in different parts of the region by deploying close protection personnel.
