Description
The proposed project aims to build the capacity of public institutions to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Specifically, the project seeks to provide executive leadership and training opportunities for up to 500 senior civil servants (Permanent Secretary or Director-General level) by September 2020 in fostering synergetic progress in advancing the 2030 Agenda and the Belt and Road Initiative, by (i) strengthening capacities of governments to advance results-oriented implementation of projects initiated under the Belt and Road Initiative and the 2030 Agenda; (ii) strengthening government capacities for integrated strategic planning, policy formulation and synergies; (iii) strengthening government capacities to engage people in the implementation, monitoring and review of the SDGs; and (iv) strengthening mutual learning through bilateral, tripartite and multilateral cooperation.

Although initially the project was severely impacted by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated the cancellation of the originally planned in-person training courses and field trips, the project team was able to adapt to the new reality by organizing a series of webinars. These webinars provided a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences on critical issues such as poverty alleviation, smart city development, and digital government, particularly in the context of combating the pandemic. Through these efforts, the project effectively enhanced the capabilities of senior policymakers and public servants from developing countries, especially those from LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS, in areas such as policy synergies, coherence, and transformative leadership.

The project’s main deliverables included:

  • Organization of 3 online webinars in replacement of the originally planned in-person training sessions.
  • Production of 27 knowledge products including background papers and case studies showcasing best practices.
  • Engagement of a total of 1063 registered participants from various developing countries, with outreach efforts through the UNPAN network. Utilizing platforms like Facebook, the webinars reached an audience of up to 19,000 viewers.
  • Expert background papers and presentations produced by the project contributed to identifying policy options and best practices, laying the groundwork for future online training courses and toolkits.
