Observance of International Youth Day 2021 - Transforming food systems: Youth innovation for human and planetary health

In 1999, General Assembly resolution 54/120 endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers of Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day. Such a day provides an opportunity to celebrate young peoples’ views and initiatives on a global scale.

The theme of International Youth Day 2021 is, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”, with the aim of highlighting that the success of such a global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of young people.

The Population Division has mainstreamed work on youth and adolescents by disaggregating its main datasets, including the estimates and projections of world population and the estimates of the international migrant stock, by age and sex. The Division also produces publications focusing on youth- and adolescent-related population and development issues such as fertility and migration. Overview

The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs organized an expert group meeting on adolescents, youth, and development. The meeting was held at the United Nations in New York from 21 to 22 July 2011.

The meeting was organized in preparation for the forty-fifth session of the Commission on Population and Development, scheduled to take place in April 2012, which would focus on “Adolescents and youth”. It was held during the 2010-2011 International Year of Youth, as promulgated by General Assembly resolution A/RES/64/134.

The meeting brought together experts from different disciplines and regions to present and discuss research on two broad themes, namely (a) the demographic dynamics that shape the number and characteristics of adolescents and youth, and (b) the ways in which adolescents and young people can be agents of socio-economic development. Selected papers prepared by the experts participating in the meeting are available as part of the Expert Paper Series published by the Population Division.
