The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the United Nations¡¯ central platform for reflection, debate, and innovative thinking on sustainable development. A gift from Sweden, originally designed by the Swedish architect Svem Markelius. Renovated in 2013, the Chamber features the new curtain ¡®Diaologos¡¯ by Ann Edholm.
The ceiling over the public gallery has been deliberately left ¡®unfinished¡¯ to symbolize that the work of the United Nations will never be finished. The architect intentionally chose to leave the pipes and ducts exposed as a symbolic reminder of the importance of the structure and foundation behind the UN¡¯s never ending work.
